Celebrating National Intern Day: A Love of Storytelling and Connections

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Editor’s Note: Every year, on the last Thursday of July, we celebrate National Intern Day, dedicated to recognizing the hard work and contributions of those who bring fresh perspectives and new energy to the workplace. This year, we asked our Racer interns to share their experiences and passions – join us in celebrating them.

Briefly introduce yourself and share a fun fact.

My name is Caroline Bienfang and I am a rising senior at Elon University in Elon, North Carolina, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in journalism. This past fall, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in the charming beach town of Sorrento, Italy. Growing up in a small harbor community south of Boston, I’ve always appreciated the unique beauty found in smaller towns. Places where neighbors share morning chats over a cup of coffee, and where no dinner table is too small for an extra place setting. In Italy, I ventured beyond familiar boundaries, embracing a rich culture, language, and lifestyle. I was fortunate enough to find that same sense of community while expanding my studies abroad. Exploring each new place deepened my passion for storytelling, as I uncovered its own captivating narrative.

What inspired you to work in the communications field?

A love of storytelling and the connections it fosters inspired me to work in communications. I’ve always believed that some of life’s most valuable lessons emerge from the rich tapestry of lived experiences shared by those around us. Every person has a unique story. These stories offer invaluable insights into our shared human experience. My drive to listen to and amplify these voices is what fuels my passion for this field. Communications is a dynamic arena where authenticity and creativity intersect. Whether I’m conducting an interview, collaborating with colleagues, or engaging in community outreach, the essence of what we do is rooted in connection. I’m excited to connect with people from various backgrounds and to help share their compelling stories. This work not only energizes me but also reinforces my belief in communication’s power to drive meaningful change.

How do you stay up to date with the latest trends in our industry?

Today’s information flood necessitates seeking news and insights from varied sources. Subscribing to both weekly and daily newsletters is invaluable. They keep me updated on industry trends and developments, helping me to stay ahead. Online media outlets provide a lot of information. Yet, I’ve found that talking with colleagues and mentors offers an even deeper industry understanding. These talks broaden my view. They also build valuable connections that enrich my knowledge and growth in the field. I’ve discovered platforms like X provide immediate information access. They are also good for following the latest trends. They offer immediate updates and enable engaging conversations in the communications community.

What advice would you give future interns in communications?

As I reflect on my time as an intern and the journey that brought me here, my advice to anyone seeking similar opportunities is to challenge themselves in every part of their role. Stepping into a new role, regardless of the field, can often seem intimidating. But having a can-do mindset will take you far. Explore unfamiliar territory and challenge yourself to try it all. I would tell all future interns to have confidence in themselves and their abilities. We all have something to bring to the table. Collaborate with colleagues and broaden your connections. Connections are valuable. They open doors and enrich your understanding of the field. Ask questions fueled by authentic interest to enhance your learning. They also show your commitment to growth. I urge future interns to venture beyond their familiar boundaries, seizing uncertainty. Taking risks and learning from mistakes is crucial in learning. It leads to greater personal and professional development.
