Editor’s Note: Every March we celebrate Women’s History Month, a month dedicated to honoring women’s contributions to American history. This year, we asked four Racers to share their thoughts on being a woman in the world today, including which women inspire them most and some of the challenges women continue to face.
Who is the most influential woman you know and how does she inspire you?
I’m fortunate to have many influential women in my life. My mom, grandmas, and sister have always been my guiding lights and sounding board. They have all followed their passions professionally and worked hard to provide for their families. If I think about my mom, I’m always amazed at how she balanced a job that kept her on the road, raised three kids, and cared for her own mom, all while finding time for new adventures.
What stereotypes about women do you think persist?
That women don’t make strong leaders. Because men have been leaders for so long, the traits associated with leadership are often thought of as masculine and not viewed as favorably when exhibited by women. In the big picture, women have significant strengths that help encourage communication and collaboration. It is these soft skills, like empathy and humility, that make strong leaders.
What traits do the women in your family share? How have they informed your opinions of what women should be like?
We all wear our hearts on our sleeves. We follow our passions, we give our all to the people in our lives, and we have compassion for others. For me, wearing your heart on your sleeve means that it’s okay to be vulnerable with others. This is when our most authentic self comes out, and we’re able to make deeper, more meaningful connections with people.
