Another bright and sunny day in Barcelona and the focus from the show floor was on AI and how the industry is expected to reach $70 billion by 2020. The industry is poised to have a transformative effect on consumers, enterprises, and governments around the world.

The overall theme of this year’s show is ‘Intelligent Connectivity’. With AI, IoT, biometrics and identity all converging to bring about new and innovative user experiences.

Sensory, who are showcasing their comprehensive line of embedded AI technologies, demonstrating the various ways intelligent voice, speech and face recognition can work on-device, rather than in the cloud. CEO Todd Mozer spoke about the future for the company as it continues to develop vision/voice fusion technologies that can recognize sounds, emotions, user intentions and more.

The highlight of the day was the first ever 5G tele-mentored live surgery! 5G is set to revolutionise the healthcare industry and help to reduce latency periods and increase image quality and definition. This will allow medical teams to have more control over decisions due to the increased amount of information they now have access to.

The session featured a live demonstration of the first 5G tele-mentored live surgery in real-time. A specialist surgeon was at MWC but able to guide surgeons in the operating room of a remote hospital in real-time in front of the audience in the auditorium.

This was just another example of an industry that is set to be transformed by 5G and artificial intelligence.
